This month, Onions NZ travelled with seven New Zealand onion exporters to the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai. The expo is hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Expo partners include the World Trade Organisation, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
This expo started in 2017 as part of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The Chinese government is committed to providing firm support to trade liberalisation and economic globalisation and actively open up the Chinese market to the world. CIIE, now in its sixth year, allows countries and regions all over the world to strengthen economic cooperation and trade ties with China and make the world economy more open.
For the New Zealand delegation, it was an opportunity to better understand the world’s second largest importer and global consumer market. Expo attendance also allowed the New Zealand delegation to strengthen existing relationships in China, and initiate new strategic relationships.
In the next five years, China is expecting to import products and services valued at more than USD10 trillion, which provides a historic opportunity for enterprises across the world to enter the huge Chinese market. CIIE facilitated supply-demand matchmaking meetings, seminars and product releases which was a great opportunity for our delegation. It was a unique opportunity to meet with a range of Chinese enterprises and better understand customs clearance, inspection and quarantine requirements.
Onions NZ appreciated the level of New Zealand agriculture and horticulture representation, indicating a commitment to continue to develop the China market and improve New Zealand - China relationships. As more relationships are established between the two countries, the better chance at success for our New Zealand-China business relationships and activity. Trips like this are crucial in the early stages of market access.
"We came away very optimistic about the market. We estimate within five to ten years we'll be exporting $50-60 million worth of onions once we gain market access.” commented Onions New Zealand Chief Executive James Kuperus in a recent interview with Radio New Zealand.
The New Zealand delegation was fortunate to spend time with the Ambassador Grahame Morton and the Consul-General to Shanghai, Ardi Barnard, Jack Lee and esteemed MPI colleagues and representatives. "Our team appreciates the work they continue to do for New Zealand in the China market."
Thanks to the NZ Chamber of Commerce who supported our efforts at CIIE during the week. We hope to visit Shanghai again soon.
